Summer project june-august 2018
It is apparent that saturated, powerful colour is an important aspect of my work and is what makes me recognisable as an artist, but it is also a key aspect of the clothes that I wear. Fashion has always been of great interest of mine, my wardrobe full of a selection of bold, bright and unusual patterned clothing. It is a way of expressing my personality and my identity to others, radiating confidence and individuality. "I am a fruit loop in a bowl of cheerios".
Many of my peers have made comments that the colours and pattern in my work look similar to a shirt I may be wearing at the time, and that it is as if I wear my artwork as well as make it. This led me to want to explore this connection with fashion and think about if it was more than just an interest.
During the summer of 2018, i spent my time producing a series of small canvas paintings of which continued the idea of creating unusual texture and three-dimensionality in a painting, each painting carrying the colours and pattern of one of the shirts in my wardrobe. This then led to photographing myself with the painting, wearing the matching shirt. Photography was key for this line of work as it demonstrates to the viewer the connection between my art and my fashion, how one has influenced the other and how both use strong, unusual colours and pattern to portray my individuality and style as an artist and as a person.
This was a successful project overall which gave me so many unique ideas about how i can explore this connection with fashion further in the future.
